Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Class of 2012 Class Giving Campaign?

The Class Giving Campaign is an annual fundraising effort coordinated by the Fourth Year Trustees targeted specifically toward members of the Class of 2012.

Why should I participate in the Class Giving Campaign?

Give to the Class Giving Campaign because you understand how important private giving is! Seven percent of U.Va.’s funding comes from the state. Sixteen percent is derived from tuition. Nearly twenty percent of the University’s academic budget comes from private donors like us: Your gift makes all the difference.

When the University of Virginia is ranked by various outside sources, like U.S. News and World Report, percentage of Alumni giving back is one criterion on which they base their decision. Your gift helps to improve the reputation of the University.

Your gift, when combined with those from other members of our Class, can make a huge impact. Moreover, participation in alumni giving helps U.Va. receive funding from other sources. Corporations and foundations look at alumni participation in giving as an indicator of confidence in and support of the institution.

To whom do I address my check?

If you are making your gift using a pledge card, then write checks to the U.Va. Class of 2012, and then on the pledge card fill out the allocation.

What if my parents want to help me make my gift?

If you and your parents both want credit for the gift, you must make a note of that on your pledge card. Alternatively, if your parents write the check for your gift, they should attach note indicating that you should receive credit for the gift. If you are making your gift online, check the "This is a joint gift" box on the on-line giving form. Underneath, include your parents' names (or if your parents are filling out the form, make sure they include yours)!

How soon does my gift get deposited in the designated accounts?

If the University area of organization has a U.Va. Fund account, which most do, the money will be deposited into those accounts within about a week. This means that if you write your check out to a CIO, for example, in the first week of January, that CIO can use the money from your gift by the second week of January! Otherwise, for organizations that do not have a U.Va. Fund account, it might take more time for your gift to be processed.

Can I make more than one pledge? What if I want to amend my pledge?

You can make more than one pledge, if you’d like. Furthermore, pledges can be amended. You cannot decrease the amount of your pledge, but you can increase the amount. You can also change the allocation (e.g. pledged to Madison House but change to Spanish Department), but please make a note of this on the pledge card so that it is not recorded as two separate pledges.

What do I get for giving to U.Va. as part of the Class Giving Campaign?

Aside from feeling good knowing that your gift will improve a place we care about and benefit future U.Va. students, you also will be recognized in our online and printed Honor Roll. Furthermore, by donating $20.12 or more, you will be able to honor a classmate or an individual you care about with your gift. Students who donate $120 or more will be invited to attend a Springtime Reception in appreciation of their gift.

How can I use the Campaign to benefit areas of U.Va. that I care about?

The Class Giving Campaign can serve as a fundraising tool that you can use! We’ve done all the hard work – we have all the logistics worked out, and Trustees are already working to get the word out about the Campaign.

Could your CIO use more funding? Would you like to see more people contribute to AccessUVA so that more students can affordably attend U.Va.? Do you wish your Academic School or Department had more funding to carry out the programs you love?
